City and County of Denver Improves Electrical Permitting Process for Portable Generators on Film Sets
DENVER — The City and County of Denver has announced an improved process for electrical permitting related to portable generators used on film sets. This update, implemented in coordination with the Community Planning and Development Department (CPD) and the Office of Special Events, is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to enhance permitting workflows and support operational efficiency across industries.
Effective immediately, electrical inspections by CPD staff are no longer required for the relocation of portable generators over 5kW, including instances where a generator is moved multiple times during a single production. This adjustment is intended to reduce logistical delays while maintaining compliance with safety codes and permitting standards.
The update applies to all permitted film productions operating within the City and County of Denver.
An electrical permit is still required and can be obtained instantly through Denver’s online permitting portal. Licensed electricians remain responsible for ensuring generators are properly grounded and comply with the Colorado Electrical Code.
“We regularly assess our permitting processes to improve service for our customers while still maintaining appropriate safety standards,” said Eric Browning, chief building official for the Community Planning and Development Department. “This adjustment is a practical step toward reducing some burden for filmmakers and ensuring our processes remain responsive to industry needs through recognition of the competencies of the licensed contractor.”
The update has also received support from City leadership.
“Denver’s film community brings jobs, creativity, and investment to our city,” said Mayor Mike Johnston. “Thanks to their feedback—and the work of our city staff—we’ve removed a small but real barrier, improving efficiency without compromising safety.”
Summary of Updates:
- Electrical inspections are no longer required when relocating portable generators over 5kW on film sets.
- Quick electrical permits remain required and are available online via the city’s e-permit system.
- Licensed electricians are responsible for proper installation and code compliance.
This update reflects Denver’s broader commitment to supporting the city’s creative economy while upholding public safety and regulatory standards.
