Denver is home to the largest sheriff department in Colorado. The Denver Sheriff Department (DSD) is comprised of two divisions with nearly 1,000 uniformed and non-uniformed staff. Operations include two jails, security for the courts and Denver Health Medical Center, extradition and transportation duties, Fugitive Unit, K9 Unit, and a Vehicle Impound Facility (VIF).
Sworn Positions
Become a Deputy
Sworn staff rank from deputy to sergeant, captain, major, division chief, and finally, sheriff. New deputies receive:
- Salary: $76,809 - $107,031
- Signing Bonus: $3000
With experience, deputies have the opportunity to specialize in court services, gang intelligence, fugitive apprehension, K9 Unit, and more. Before beginning Academy training, you must pre-qualify by meeting certain requirements, including a physical agility test. Security Specialists
Become a Security Specialist
One of the most important positions at the DSD is the uniformed position of Security Specialist. The training is totally different from the deputy sworn position and is categorized as a civilian, or professional staff.
The security specialist helps run the control rooms at DSD facilities, ensuring operations on each floor run smoothly and safely.
To become a security specialist, you must first meet the following minimum requirements:
- Age: 18 years old.
- Education: graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET, or TASC Certificate.
- Fitness: meet the certified physical fitness standards adopted by the department.
- Licensure/Certification: a valid driver license at the time of application (must be kept current).
